George Liele, a former slave, sailed to Jamaica in 1782 to share the gospel and start new churches. Risking re-enslavement, Liele was among the first Baptist missionaries in the world, and perhaps the very first missionary from North America. Liele's work directly resulted in the Baptist witness taking root in Jamaica, where today we partner with the Jamaican Baptist Union. Early work also took place in Haiti and Mexico.
