Seeing the face of Jesus...over the phone

"Breakfast Club" is one of the highlights of my week.  It's a Bible Study at 6:30 am at the cafe of a local grocery store.  With high schoolers.  Go figure!  They are amazing, funny, and insightful young people and I love our time together.  At the end of each study we pray for each other.  Thursday, my request was to see Jesus in my very busy work day.

Arriving at work, I was greeted by the usual emails, phone messages, and assorted other needs and demands. Bracing myself for the faceless tasks ahead, I dove in.  Normal day, but seeing the face of Jesus? It wasn't happening... well, I wasn't seeing it.

Late in the afternoon I made some phone calls and left a couple of messages.  One message I left was to a volunteer whose nickname is "the Bishop".  Raymond Bunn is a delightful guy, a pastor, and a volunteer slated to serve in the Democratic Republic of Congo for the third summer.  While I was on another call, he called and left a message. Disappointed that I had missed him, I called back right away.  The message machine clicked on, I listened, and started my message..again.  How hard IS it to get in touch with the Bishop??  A smile started in my heart when I heard his voice on the other end..."Hello?"  "Hey, Bishop!" our conversation started, and we began catching up.

I love talking with Raymond.  He is passionate about missions, the Congo, the ministry God has through Ann and Bill Clemmer, and he tells a GREAT story!  He makes me laugh, his stories bring tears to my eyes, and through hearing about his mission experiences, I remember how much I love my job of serving volunteers.

I have never met Raymond, nor seen a photo of him.  The only picture I have of him is in my mind, through his volunteer application, his stories, and how he tells them.  It doesn't matter, though.  I know his is the face of Jesus, to me, to folks in the Congo, to missionaries, and to people in his congregation and community.

Did I SEE the face of Jesus in my day? Well, yes!  Over the phone, as Raymond was talking with me, I saw Jesus in Raymond, in Bill Clemmer and other missionaries that receive Raymond when he serves in the Congo, in the volunteers that he is assisting this year, in the Congolese who have walked alongside Raymond in the Congo.

Thanks to Karen M, Karen H, John H, Shelby, and Mer who prayed for me this week.  Know your prayers were answered!!

To volunteers - current, past, or future...  I love to hear from you!  You are an encouragement to me as I hear your experiences from the field, and I want to pray for you in specific ways.

Who will you be the face of Jesus for today?  You may never know!
