At a village baptism John performed earlier this year, one older woman in her traditional Akha dress, shuffled nervously back and forth. She kept rubbing her arms with her hands and her legs with her feet. She obviously felt terrified. The evangelist came and asked John to talk with her. John asked her what was wrong and her response surprised him: she said she felt afraid of the spirits. Coming from an animist background, she still felt frightened of the evil spirits. John asked her if she believed in Jesus. She said, “Yes!” John then asked her if she had asked Jesus to live in her heart. Again she said yes. What a relief it was for this woman when John explained to her that the power of Jesus was superior to the power of the spirits. She immediately became calm and proceeded with the baptism. All of us should take time to remember that Jesus is all-powerful, and if we are on his side, we can stand firm and conquer.
