God’s Armor

A few weeks ago Edwar came over to talk. Edwar has been a Christian for nearly two years, now. After about 10 minutes of small talk, he finally shared what was on his heart. “There’s something you do I don’t like,” he said forthrightly. “Oh, what’s that?” I asked. “The other day you sent me a note by way of that fellow who lives up the way. You have to be careful of that guy. You know what I did when he came to my door? I was sitting at the table eating so I told him to just put the envelope on the shelf by the door. When I finished eating, I washed my hands and walked over to the shelf backward like this and being careful to look straight ahead, I reached over my shoulder like this and picked up the envelope.” I watched incredulous as he acted out the motions. “Why did you do that?” He frowned at me, taken aback by my ignorance, then leaned close and whispered, “Sorcery! You have to be careful with that fellow! Last time he brought me an envelope I was sick for three days!” It dawned on me that, Edwar, new in his faith, still lived under the fear and insecurity that is typical of Haitian life. So I began to admonish him from Ephesians 5:10 where Paul tells us to, “Put on the whole armor of God.” Our boys recently had to memorize this scripture for school, so I was able to itemize from memory the breastplate of righteousness, the belt of truth, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, the boots of the gospel of peace and the sword of the spirit, which is the Word of God. This passage came to life for both of us as I saw Edwar nod and show increased confidence as I checked off each item of armor. Here was a brother in Christ who had a keen sense of need for this armor and didn’t realize he had it at his disposal.
