December has arrived, with the joy, the lights, the smells, and the excitement of the end of the year. In fact, November and December are both months for reflection, meditation, and recaps. As we look ahead to a new year in 2010, we embrace what 2009 brought us and refocus for what lies ahead.

As Carlos has been sharing lately, this is a time when God speaks to us through His Word, inviting us to go back to the basic “good tidings” refreshed to us from Isaiah 61:1-2 as written in Luke 4:18-19 (NIV):

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."

This is being spoken of and repeated by Jesus himself, alright; but it is also our calling as His disciples to do as He has commanded. We have in Levi an example of how our response should be, as we read in Luke 5:27b-28

“Follow Me," Jesus said to him, and Levi got up, left everything and followed Him.”

No questions asked; simple, straightforward obedience.

Therefore, this holiday season, we follow Him by joining our home church’s Christmas celebrations in the children’s choir, bells’ choir, Shabach (the pantomime ministry), and the church’s Christmas concert. Alberto continues to enjoy his homeschooling which is biblically based, and Carlos is already doing research on Spain in preparation for our move.

It is wonderful to stay connected through the holidays and we just had our PR-based MPTers gathering couple of weeks ago and were able to celebrate our ordination and two birthdays. We also had our US-based MPTers skype conference call with folks connecting from IN (Indy and Hayden), MA (Boston), NJ (Oakland and Bridgewater), NC (somewhere), and PR (San Lorenzo and Caguas). Eight different locations and yet we felt as if we were in each others’ living rooms… Technology was on our side this time and we were blessed with a wonderful time of fellowship and catch up.

We pray that as you prepare for your own family and church’s celebrations this holiday season, you can take some time to reflect on Jesus’ call to Levi and make it your own. Next year is full of challenges and adventures as new winds blow us toward east to Spain to serve alongside the churches in the Spanish Evangelical Baptist Union, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor in the midst of daily challenges. Like Levi, we get up, leave everything and follow Him. Some details are already in place; others are yet to be worked out. Please continue to pray during this time of celebration, transition, and anticipation. Your love, encouragement, and ongoing support make our journey possible.

Diciembre ha llegado, con su algarabía, sus luces, sus aromas y su emoción de fin de año. De hecho, noviembre y diciembre son meses de reflexión, meditación y remembranzas. A la vez que vislumbramos un Año Nuevo 2010, hacemos recuento de lo que trajo el 2009 y nos enfocamos en lo que se avecina.

Carlos ha estado compartiendo recientemente de lo que Dios nos habla en Su palabra, invitándonos a regresar a las “buenas nuevas” básicas, refrescadas del recuento en Isaias 61:1-2 y releídas en Lucas 4:18-19 (Reina Valera 1995):

“El Espíritu del Señor está sobre mí, por cuanto me ha ungido para dar buenas nuevas a los pobres; me ha enviado a sanar a los quebrantados de corazón, a pregonar libertad a los cautivos y vista a los ciegos, a poner en libertad a los oprimidos y a predicar el año agradable del Señor"

Esto se refiere a y lo relee el mismo Jesús, sí; pero también es nuestro llamado como Sus discípulos y discípulas hacer lo que El nos ha mandado. Tenemos en Leví un ejemplo de cómo debe ser nuestra respuesta, al leer en Lucas 5:27b-28 (NVI)

“—Sígueme—le dijo Jesús. Y Leví se levantó, lo dejó todo y lo siguió.”

Sin preguntas; obediencia sencilla y directa.

Por ello, en este tiempo de fiesta, nos unimos a las celebraciones de Navidad de nuestra iglesia en el coro de niños y niñas y el de campanas, con Shabach (el ministerio de pantomima) y el concierto del coro mayor. Alberto sigue disfrutando su educación en el hogar con materiales bíblicos y Carlos ya busca información de España para prepararnos para la mudanza.

Es maravilloso mantenernos conectados durante las fiestas y recientemente tuvimos una reunión del MPT en PR para celebrar nuestra ordenación y dos cumpleaños. También nos reunimos con el MPT de EE.UU. por skype conectándonos desde IN (Indianapolis y Hayden), MA (Boston), NJ (Oakland y Bridgewater), NC (algún lugar), y PR (San Lorenzo y Caguas). Ocho lugares y se sentía como si estuviéramos en una misma sala… La tecnología nos ayudó y fuimos bendecidos con un tiempo de compañerismo y hermandad.

Oramos que en medio de los preparativos para las celebraciones familiares y de iglesia esta Navidad, pueda haber espacio para reflexionar en el llamado de Jesús a Leví y lo hagamos nuestro. El próximo año viene preñado de desafíos y aventuras con nuevos vientos que soplan al este hacia España para servir junto a las iglesias de la Unión Evangélica Bautista Española, predicando el año agradable del Señor más allá de los desafíos diarios. Como Leví, nos levantamos, lo dejamos todo y Le seguimos. Algunos detalles ya están listos; otros siguen en el tintero. Seguimos orando en este tiempo de celebración, transición y anticipación. Su amor, entusiasmo y apoyo contínuo siguen animándonos para seguir esta aventura.
