February is the month of love and friendship. Our journal’s title comes from ABCNJ’s Regional Pastor, Lee Spitzer, who conducted a survey on the subject with 65 of the 105 ABFMS’ missionaries in 2009. We would like to begin a series of journals on love and friendship as it relates to mission by sharing, on even months throughout 2010, some thoughts about and from our MPTers. Proverbs 17:17 (The Message) sets the tone for our sharing:

“Friends love through all kinds of weather, and
families stick together in all kinds of trouble.”

  We met Carolyn Haines in 2005 in New Jersey. She joined our MPT as association rep for the Watchung Association. Carolyn, who is an active member of Freedom in Christ Baptist Church (FICBC), became one of us. She says that God took her weakened heart and replaced it with a “heart for missions.”

  Carolyn came to Chile in 2007, a miracle trip. God provided the opportunity for her to see firsthand what He was doing with the Chilean believers. From association rep, Carolyn became our ABCNJ Regional Advocate and is very dear to us.

  While on our 2007 visit to the US, our friendship grew as we spent several nights at her home. In September 2009, church members from FICBC provided an apartment for our stay in New Jersey. The congregation and some friends spent several months equipping the apartment. We were able to attend their Bible studies on Tuesday nights, Sunday worship and Sunday afternoon fellowship. This was truly a time of refreshment for our souls…

  Carolyn joined us during our visits to several churches and experienced her own challenges. On the Sunday we were to leave Middlesex to visit churches in South Jersey, she had a minor accident on her way to meet us. She decided to stay behind, got her car fixed with the help of church members, and met us for that evening’s gathering in Bridgeton, and on to Millville, and Cape May. While in Cape May she became friends with her host family who invited her to return at Thanksgiving for a Messiah sing-in. All of this happened because of love, friendship, and mission...   As Lee Spitzer explored with us on how friendships and love have been integral in our ministries and mission, we saw afresh how important relationships are. Friends love through all kinds of weather, and families stick together in all kinds of trouble… says our verse. We have experienced that with our families; in those that are part of our MPTs, like Carolyn; in many of you in the churches; and, in our fields of service.

  More recently, we have experienced that as we have watched the outpouring of God’s love to those in Haiti after their January 12th earthquake. We pray for them and for colleagues like the James, the Nzungas, the Pierres, the Schweissings, Kristy, Madeline, Adalia, and others yet to get involved; that as time goes by, there will be many who will continue to love and do their mission in Haiti as a sign of friendship to our neighboring island’s people. May the Lord prevent us to forget Haiti as time passes and other urgencies arise around the world. May we remain faithful in our commitment to pray, to give, and to go. Not just the first week, the first month, or even the first year, but until it is necessary. Through His blood, Jesus has made us family to each other, to stick together in all kinds of trouble. Yes, we all can pray, give, and go!

Febrero es el mes del amor y la amistad. El título es del Ministro Ejecutivo de ABC-Nueva Jersey, Lee Spitzer, quien desarrolló un estudio en el 2009 con 65 de los 105 misioneros/as de Ministerios Internacionales. Comenzamos una serie de boletines del amor y la amistad con relación a las misiones al compartir, en los meses pares de 2010, pensamientos acerca de y directamente de nuestro Ministerio Participativo Transcultural (MPT-PR). Proverbios 17:17 (La Biblia de las Américas) sienta las bases para este compartir:

“En todo tiempo ama el amigo, y
el hermano nace para el tiempo de angustia.”

  Hilda García es madre, suegra y abuela y en el MPT es Energizadora (anima la participación en viajes misioneros cortos). Con sus propias experiencias misioneras cortas, y por los lazos de amor que le unen a los BGs, es una alternativa obvia de constante comunicación y visitas frecuentes.

  Johnny León fue director de escuela de Mayra y es maestro de Escuela Bíblica en la clase del Coro en Caguas para Carlos y Mayra. En el MPT es el Asesor Legal y un “all around” muy accesible. Tenemos 5 diferentes lugares de nacimiento; escenario fértil para más de una complicación… Johnny ha sido cómplice con su esposa Rita de varios momentos de crecimiento de nuestra familia.

  Gloria Cruz es misionera de corazón y líder innata en Caguas I junto a su esposo Cheíto. Gloria estuvo pendiente de enviarnos tarjetitas y correos electrónicos al campo de misión. En el MPT es el Enlace de Relaciones con las Iglesias. Sus ejecutorias en las juntas de la iglesia, particularmente en la de mayordomía/misiones y la de evangelismo, la hacen sensible a las necesidades de apoyo y orientación misionera entre las iglesias que nos rodean y apoyan.

  Al explorar con Lee Spitzer cómo el amor y la amistad son parte integral en nuestro ministerio y misión, volvemos a enfatizar cuán importantes son las relaciones. “En todo tiempo ama el amigo, y el hermano nace para el tiempo de angustia...” dice el versículo. Lo hemos experimentado en la familia; con quienes integran nuestros MPTs, como Hilda, Johnny y Gloria; con muchas personas en la iglesia; y con quienes convivimos en el campo de misión...

  Más recientemente, lo hemos visto en las múltiples y abundantes demostraciones de amor de Dios por el pueblo en Haití después del terremoto del 12 de enero. Oramos por colegas como los James, los Nzunga, los Pierre, los Schweissing, Kristy, Madeline, Adalia, y quienes están por involucrarse; que con el pasar del tiempo, sigan habiendo quienes oren, amen y ministren en Haití como una señal de amistad al pueblo de la isla vecina. Dios nos libre de olvidar a Haiti segun pasa el tiempo u otras emergencias surjan alrededor del mundo. Que podamos mantenernos fieles en nuestro compromiso de orar, ofrendar e ir. No solo la primera semana, el primer mes o incluso el primer año, sino el tiempo que sea necesario. Por Su sangre, Jesús nos hizo familia unos de las otras, porque “el hermano nace para el tiempo de angustia”. Sigamos orando, ofrendando y yendo…
