A Time for Endings and Beginnings

The rebirth of spring is here. Most of the cherry blossoms have already bloomed, drifted to the ground and we can now see the new leaves on the trees. Many other trees and plants are now in bloom bringing new color to the landscape.

Spring in Japan is a time for endings and beginnings. The Japanese schools as well as many businesses and organizations begin their year in April and end in March. This means that March is filled with graduations and end of year business.April is the time for entrance into school and into the business world.

I attended Hakuai Kindergarten's graduation on March 23.It was fun to share the joy of graduation with the 12 children and their parents.Japanese kindergartens traditionally have had three age levels: 3 year old, 4 year old, and 5 year old. Many churches sponsor kindergartens. It provides a means to witness to God's love to the children and their parents. It also provides a financial supplement for the church. But times are changing and there is a dramatic drop in the number of kindergarten-age children.12 children graduated from Hakuai Kindergarten, but only 4 children entered into the new class.Next year, as Hakuai Kindergarten celebrates its 100-year Anniversary, it wonders how long it can continue with the reduced number of children.

On April 17, Naomi Kashihara was baptized at the Hiroshima Peace Christian Church. She has been attending the church for several years and her daughter has been active in the church school.

May the Peace of Christ be with each of you,
