Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

For the past few days I have been taking care of some health crises that have come up in the indigenous area of Bella Vista, the place where I do pastoral work and various community activities.

Many young children have become ill due to situations related to poor nutrition and intestinal parasites. Specifically, the situation with a child named Eusebio has been alarming. We were able to convince the mother to take him to the hospital at about 8:00 PM in the evening. It was not easy because in this area there is no electricity and at this hour the cars that are traveling this highway do not always want to stop. In the emergency room, they thought he would die that night. Eusebio has now been hospitalized for 30 days. He was diagnosed with severe malnutrition, since his weight is the same as that of a four month old child. The clothing that we bought him is for children, who are six months old and he is 19 months old.

God has been wonderful throughout this whole emergency situation. They have taken Eusebio off oxygen, intravenous, and he finished the treatment for the parasites. Now he is on a special diet so that he can gain weight. We succeeded in getting him on a waiting list so that he can be transferred to a special facility for malnourished children. Eusebio is being treated by an ophthalmologist since he lacks Vitamin A, and he developed an ulcer on his cornea.

The situation is sad, but he represents one of the thousands of indigenous children in this country who are suffering from malnutrition. Also, these children do not have adequate housing so that they can live a dignified life.

I ask for your prayers so that we can maintain a pastoral presence in this community as well as continue to represent Christ's actions in the midst of his people.

Apreciadas hermanas en Cristo:

Hace unos días he estado atendiendo unas cuantas crisis de enfermedad que han surgido en la zona indígena de Bella Vista, lugar donde también realizo trabajo pastoral y acciones comunitarias variadas.

Muchas niñas han venido enfermándose por situaciones relacionadas con la mala alimentacion y los parásitos intestinales. En específico la situacion de un bebé de nombre Eusebio ha sido alarmante. Logramos que la madre decidiera trasladarlo al hospital como a las 8:00 de la noche. No fue fácil porque en la zona no hay energía eléctrica y a esa hora los carros que pasan por la carretera no siempre desean detenerse. En la sala de urgencia pensaron que esa noche moriría. Eusebio ya lleva 30 días hospitalizado. Fue diagnosticado con desnutricion severa pues pesa lo que un bebé de 4 meses puede pesar. La ropita que le compramos es para bebés de 6 meses y él tiene 19 meses de edad.

Dios ha sido maravilloso en medio de toda la emergencia. Ya le ha sido retirado el oxígeno y el suero. Termino el tratamiento para los parásitos y en estos momentos está con alimentacion especial para ganar peso. Logramos que entrara en una lista de espera para que sea trasladado a unas facilidades especiales para niñas desnutridas. Eusebio está siendo tratado por un oftalmologo pues por motivo de la falta de vitamina A le salio una úlcera en una cornea.

Es triste su situacion, pero élrepresenta uno de los miles de niñas indígenas que en éste país sufrende desnutricion y por la falta de tener las facilidades de vivienda básicas para vivir una vida digna.

Les pido sus oraciones para que no solo sigamos haciendo presencia pastoral en esa comunidad sino que podamos seguir representando las acciones que Cristo hizo en medio del pueblo.
