Dear Friends in Christ:
Recently, I was invited to the village Akha Patana for a celebration of a family and the village. The whole village was present as we had a worship service and then a meal for everyone afterwards.
It was 25 years ago that the father of this family decided to follow the Jesus way when his twin boys were born, they were not killed. According to the ways of the spirit beliefs in Akha culture twins are believed to be a curse and not a blessing. One of the twins is bad and the other is good, but we do not know which one is the good. So, the house is usually burned down and both twins are smothered with the ashes.
But, the gospel came to this village and the father decided to follow the Jesus way--- it was a risk of faith. He did not follow the way of shaman in the village who would be saying --- twins were born you must have offended the spirits, something must be done. Today, because the gospel of Jesus Christ has come to northern Thailand this practice has been eliminated.
Now, families who have twins who are not Christian may give them up to others because they are afraid, but their lives are saved. Occasionally, Ruth and I have been involved in a situation where a family would adopt some twins and we were asked to help with milk powder. Through one of our partners, the Akha Foundation, there is an emergency fund to help in these kinds of situations.
The good news is that the gospel of Jesus Christ gives hope to people and it does change behavior and society as well.
