La Paz is approximately 1000 miles south of the United States border. Therefore, reunions with our ABC colleagues that work in Northern Baja are few and far between. So in early March, it was with great anticipation that we were able to arrange for ABC Missionaries Rick and Mercy Barnes, who have specialized training in New Church Planting, to come to La Paz from Mexicali. They flew to La Paz to facilitate an all-day workshop with the leaders of the Southern Baja Baptist Convention. Over 50 people crammed into a classroom at our Theological School to receive training in this area. The churches of Southern Baja have a passion for sharing Jesus, and for planting new churches. At the end of March they were able to apply their new found knowledge as two busloads of people traveled to the city of Constitucion (134 miles North of La Paz) to canvas neighborhoods for a new church plant. It is exciting to see their passion taking root in action! Another trip to Constitucion is planned for April 28.
* We covet your prayers as this adventure continues.
In mid-March we hosted a mission group from Cordova Community Church in Cordova, Alaska. This group of adults and teenagers worked with the Cabo San Lucas Mission of the First Baptist Church of La Paz. The mission recently hired its first pastor, and is in the process of constructing a building. The group poured the roof for this building, as well as new portions for the floor. The stayed in homes with families and were blessed by the experience. The guys stayed with a family that had no hot water, so they woke up to cold showers every day. After the first gasp, they said it wasn’t too bad! Cabo San Lucas is expanding by leaps and bounds. Every day the ferry brings people from Southern Mexico looking for work on the Baja Peninsula, either in tourism or in the produce fields. Many of their expectations and dreams do not match with the reality of actually living here. This is where the hope of Jesus Christ can and will make a difference.
* Please pray for this mission as it seeks to make a difference in the name of Christ.
The organizational service for Crossroads Christian Fellowship (The English-speaking Ministry) to become a Mission Church of the convention has been postponed from April 28th to November. It was decided to include this celebration as part of the convention’s Annual Church meetings which always occur over Thanksgiving weekend. So stayed tuned! (We talked about this celebration in our February Journal Article.)
Thank you for your prayers, financial gifts and loving encouragement!
