Some people call them "kingdom moments." Other people call them "God sightings," or "God things." Whatever you choose to call them, I want to share a few with you.
Kingdom Moment #1
Mylinda's trip to Green Lake, WI for the Living Hope/International Christians Conference on
Prostitution was a powerful, scary, sad, worshipful and joyful experience all at the same time. She was privileged to share the trip with Judith and Xinia, leaders in the Baptist work here, and with people from over 35 countries who are serving in ministries that battle prostitution and its dehumanization of women, men, and children. Participants went home from the event determined to reach out to the victims of prostitution, and to prevent its spread. The conference was born out of the vision of ABC missionary Lauren Bethel.
Kingdom Moment #2
The recent visit of Dan Buttry was a big time blessing. He taught courses on Conflict Resolution and Transformative Teaching. Over 30 people participated and the Spirit broke through some of
the patterns and ruts that keep people from learning and that keep the church from truly being community. Some pastors confessed to scolding their people instead of loving them. A woman began to see that she really has gifts to offer and that she has infinite worth. There were other signs of the Spirit's presence: laughter, apologies, and creativity. Dan's passion for Jesus and his determination to be a peacemaker are inspiring. And, having seen a soccer game here, Dan will now be rooting for Costa Rica in the World Cup.
Kingdom Moment #3
A roof is now going up over the patio at the Federation Building. Those of you who have visited us know that this has been a long time dream. The project allows us to have another large space for gatherings, classes and worship services. The roof is being finished just as the rainy season begins.
Kingdom Moment #4
Gary was a proud professor as his "Exegesis" students turned in their final projects. Each one had done a thorough study of a Bible passage and shared their interpretation with the whole group. It was one of those academic experiences that make you fall in love with scripture and want to keep on following Jesus. Mylinda also got to be a proud professor as her worship class presented their final project; a Sunday service. The result was a joyful and creative service that honored Christ in ways that were clearly Costa Rican and solidly scriptural.
Conclusion
I have grown tired of the phrase "Thanks for Sharing" I think it comes from the Small Group movement but has gotten tired and trite. I've even heard it used as a translation of "That's a really stupid idea, can we move on?" But I'm tempted to use it because all the things mentioned above are a result of your giving. Mylinda and her friends were able to go to the conference
because of special donations from American Baptist Women, member of our Missionary Partnership Team, and other special individuals. Lauren Bethel could put on a conference and Dan Buttry was able to come because of your giving to the World Mission Offering. The roof went up because of a donation from the Great Rivers Region. Speaking of that, the Costa Rican Baptist convention recently sent $1000 to the Great Rivers Region for tornado relief; partnership is truly a two way street! We get to teach classes because of your prayer and financial support. We want to thank you for all of your giving to the whole ABC family (United Mission, America for Christ, One Great Hour of Sharing) as well as to our salary and to special projects. I'm tempted to use that overused phrase, but I just can't. How about "Gracias por Compartir." I think you know what it means.
Gary
