As the world has remembered Haití’s earthquake’s first anniversary, we’d like to share how our national partner, Unión Evangélica Bautista de España (UEBE, Baptist Evangelical Union of Spain), through their Ministerios de Obra Social (MOS, Social Action Ministries) and their Foundation ABSIDE have been present in relief of our brothers and sisters in Haití. As the world shook January 12, 2010, Daniel Banyuls, Director of ABSIDE and MOS in UEBE, immediately gathered the churches around the people in Haití.

From Pastor Daniel’s report to the general assembly last October:

“In line with our Ministry and in coordination with the closest Baptist Conventions, just days from the tragedy a team was visiting Haití to provide a first phase of immediate relief that our churches had gathered valued in 40.000 euros (approx. $55,000) invested in situ to purchase food, medicine, and water supplies which our brothers in the Dominican Baptist Convention helped us distribute. But the level of destruction and the needs were so immense that in faith we begun, for the first time, a second phase that would focus in housing for those who had lost everything. Parallel donations in historic numbers added to almost 90.000 euros (approx $120,000) with which we were able to get and take to Haití—this time with a team of six people—100 tarps for the construction of two camp site for refugees called “Luther King’s Camps” that are used by a thousand benefited people without discrimination of creed, gender or origin. … the Spanish Baptist aid to Haití is not finished as the Social Aid in the Baptist Community in Madrid is ready to send a container with medical aid gathered by the Health Council of the Madrid Community and we will very likely continue to support in the improvements to the two “Luther King’s Camps” built in the outskirts of Port-au-Prince. Tragedy in Haití has proven, once again, the sensitivity of our Baptist people and their notable generosity in the midst of emergency situations that has required the most important denominational response from our Spanish evangelical people. …”

During that 2010 general assembly, one of the 100 tarps was on display and will remain available to the churches in Spain to see what has been made available to our brothers and sisters in Haití. Inside the tarp, they had a photo expo of faces and Haitian looks that is also available, free of charge, to the churches that are to be encouraged to continue their loving and sacrificial support of those still in need in Haití, for their sorrows are not finished yet…

Thus the cycle continues, for Acts 20:35 says “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Hence, our receiving national convention gives abundantly and with much love, in coordination with fellow national conventions in the Caribbean, to our dear ones in Haiti. This is an example that encourages our faith and reminds us that from all peoples and to all peoples we are to continue living out holistic ministries as Jesus Christ’s ambassadors around the world. Continue to pray for our colleagues directly serving in Haiti: Nzunga Mabudiga and Kihomi Ngwemi, Steve and Nancy James, and Deliris Carrión-Rosa, as well as from the Dominican Republic: Kristy Engel and Madeline Flores-López, and the many volunteers that have shared their gifts throughout this first year and beyond.

Thank you for allowing us to serve alongside UEBE and through them those in Haiti that continue to need our prayers, our encouragement, and His resources through each of us.

Mientras el mundo ha recordado el primer aniversario del terremoto en Haití, compartimos cómo nuestro socio nacional, la Unión Evangélica Bautista de España (UEBE), a través de sus Ministerios de Obra Social (MOS) y su Fundación ABSIDE (Agencia Bautista para la Solidaridad Internacional para el Desarrollo—http://fundacionabside.blogspot.com/) ha estado presente en los esfuerzos de alivio a nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Haití. Al toque del terremoto al mundo el 12 de enero de 2010, Daniel Banyuls, Director de ABSIDE y MOS en UEBE, inmediatamente reunió a las iglesias alrededor de la gente en Haití.

Del informe del Pastor Daniel a la asamblea general el pasado octubre:

“En la línea habitual de este Ministerio y en coordinación con las Convenciones Bautistas más cercanas pocos días después de la tragedia un equipo visitaba Haití para llevar en mano la primera ayuda de emergencia que nuestras Iglesias habían aportado por valor de 40.000 euros (aprox. $55,000) invertidos in situ en la compra de alimentos,  medicamentos y depósitos de agua y que nos ayudaron a distribuir los hermanos de la Convención Bautista Dominicana. Pero el nivel de destrucción y las necesidades eran tan ingentes que por fe vimos la necesidad de poner en marcha, por primera vez, una segunda fase que se enfocara en la ayuda para viviendas para los que lo habían perdido todo. En paralelo los donativos aumentaron de forma histórica hasta llegar a casi 90.000 euros (aprox. $120,000) por lo que pudimos adquirir y trasladar a Haití—esta vez con un equipo de seis personas—100 tiendas de campaña para la construcción de dos campos de refugiados llamados “Campos Luther King” y que utilizan para un millar de personas beneficiarias sin ningún tipo de exclusión por credo ni género ni origen. … la ayuda bautista española en Haití no ha terminado pues la Obra Social de la Comunidad Bautista de Madrid tiene preparado el envío de un contenedor con material médico fruto de donaciones de la Consejería de Sanidad de la Comunidad de Madrid y es muy probable que podamos seguir ayudando a la mejora de los dos “Campos Luther King” construidos a las afueras de Puerto Príncipe. La tragedia de Haití nos ha hecho constatar, una vez más, la sensibilidad de nuestro pueblo bautista y su encomiable generosidad ante situaciones de emergencia y que ha supuesto la respuesta denominacional más importante del pueblo evangélico español. …”

Durante esa asamblea general de 2010, una de las 100 tiendas de campaña estuvo expuesta y permanecerá a disposición de las Iglesias en España para que vean lo que han enviado a nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Haití. Dentro de la tienda de campaña, expusieron fotos de “miradas haitianas” que también está disponible, libre de costo, para que las Iglesias sigan animadas a continuar apoyando con amor y sacrificio a quienes todavía lo necesitan en Haití, pues sus dificultades aún no han terminado…

Así continúa el ciclo, pues Hechos 20:35 nos dice “Más bienaventurado es dar que recibir.” De esta manera, la convención nacional que nos ha recibido da abundantemente y con amor, en coordinación con convenciones hermanas nacionales en El Caribe, a nuestros amados en Haití. Este es un ejemplo que alienta nuestra fe y nos recuerda que de todos los pueblos y a todos los pueblos hemos de seguir viviendo vidas que se empeñen en ministerios integrales como embajadores y embajadoras de Jesucristo alrededor del mundo. Continuemos orando por nuestros colegas directamente ministrando en Haití: Nzunga Mabudiga y Kihomi Ngwemi, Steve y Nancy James y Deliris Carrión-Rosa, así como desde la República Dominicana: Kristy Engel y Madeline Flores-López, y tantas personas voluntarias que han compartido sus parabienes durante este año y más allá.
