Eyewitness report from Pastor Daniel Banyuls, Director of the Social Action Ministry in UEBE and Fundacion ABSIDE on his visit to Lorca, Spain.
Dear brothers and sisters:
Today, Monday, and after our visit to the earthquake zone on Saturday, reviewing its consequences, we can affirm that the damages coincide with the preliminary reports and that you have been able to see in the first pictures you have received from UEBE’s General Secretary’s office.
The sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Lorca has suffered considerable damage in the exterior walls and many of the interior ones; therefore, meanwhile they are having their services outside of the building. Though the structure seems will be able to be saved, costs to rebuild could be very high (as high as in the 100.000 Euros).
The social work of this Church, the Therapeutic Association "The Good Way" will most likely not be able to keep their buildings as they have been severely affected. They are already looking for a place to save the machinery they use to teach trade workshops to those in rehab (carpentry, sewing, etc.) and where to house these rehab men and abused women interns (around 30 people).
The mission-church "Good Shepherd" has been less affected by the earthquakes and it seems like they will be able to claim some financial coverage from their insurance.
However, between these congregations we have confirmed that 80-90% of the membership has been affected and, at least, 10 families will not be able to return to their homes.
At first, these would be the objectives and priorities of our Baptist ministry in Lorca after the earthquakes. However, the reaction from our brothers and sisters there has amazed and surprised me. I have not seen them cry (they say they did in their day) and their spiritual strength and emotional entirety is quite remarkable. In fact, what I did hear is them praising God and saw them thinking more of the needs of their neighbors and how to care for them before caring for their own needs. However, I am convinced that this tragedy will turn into a blessing and will be a tool that God will use to boost His ministry in this place.
Meanwhile we continue to encourage our Churches in the Union to participate however the Lord shows you. And I would like to highlight several initiatives of solidarity that can be framed as possible examples:
1. Our sister Church in Orihuela has set forth a campaign called "Orihuela with Lorca" that pretends to gather Resources and use our protocol to support the community in Lorca. Right now they have the explicit support from the Bar Association, the Chamber of Commerce, Employers’ Association, the Social Forum, and the Miguel Hernández College.
2. The Church in Murcia is preparing a solidarity concert for Lorca.
3. And, from overseas, and in response to requests from UEBE’s General Secretary, International Ministries of the American Baptist Churches (represented by our esteemed Pastor José Norat) has committed a donation of 10.000$ for Lorca. On the other hand, the International Mission Board (Baptist Mission in Spain) has assured us of their forthcoming significant effort to support our brothers and sisters. And we have received numerous messages of solidarity from our churches, from FIEIDE, IEE and many brothers and sisters from overseas.
4. The ÁBSIDE Foundation is preparing projects to fundraise emergency public assistance resources.
We are certainly open to other initiatives that can be useful to raise our support of our people in Lorca. Let us open our eyes and minds and take advantage of this tragedy to begin concrete action in our own local Churches and communicate them to our cities and surroundings as a witness of the Baptist church caring for the needs of the human being. Most likely, they will all be well received by the Social Action Ministry.
In conclusion, and following protocol of maximum local participation, on Saturday we organized in Lorca the Commission that will handle the distribution of the support received and that is includes the Pastor of FBC Lorca, the lay leader of mission-church Good Shepherd, the pastor of the Church in Murcia, and the southeastern area representative, with the coordination of UEBE’s Social Action Ministries.
A sad ending note is the recent death due to illness (in the wee hours of the morning) of the Brother of the Pastor in Lorca, Francisco Martínez, who has urgently traveled to Lleida and is already returning home.
Meanwhile these are the news we have available that are expanding each day. We expect to send a brief report with more initiatives to bless the city of Lorca and their Baptist ministry with our prayers, work, and resources.

American Baptists can also send your support through your church by making checks payable to the church with “One Great Hour of Sharing – Spain Earthquake Relief” written in the memo section. Queridos hermanos y hermanas:
Hoy lunes, y después de visitar el sábado la zona del terremoto y contemplar sus consecuencias, podemos afirmar que el examen de los daños confirma el resumen que habíamos adelantado y que ya habéis podido contemplar en las primeras imágenes recibidas desde nuestra Secretaría General.
El templo de la Primera Iglesia Bautista de Lorca ha sufrido importantes grietas en sus paredes exteriores y muchas de sus interiores por lo que, por el momento, deberán celebrar los cultos fuera del edificio. Aunque la estructura parece que podrá salvarse los gastos de la reedificación pueden ser elevados (podrían ascender a cifras que bordean los 100.000 Euros).
La obra social de esta Iglesia, la Asociación Terapéutica "El Buen Camino" con casi seguridad no podrá mantener sus edificios en pie ya que también han sido gravemente afectados. Los hermanos ya están buscando una nave industrial adonde trasladar la maquinaria que usaban en sus talleres (carpintería, costura, etc.) y donde ubicar a todos sus internos (alrededor de 30 personas).
La Iglesia "Buen Pastor" se ha visto menos afectada por el terremoto y todo parece indicar que podrán reclamar cobertura económica del consorcio de seguros.
Sin embargo, entre ambas congregaciones se confirma que están afectadas alrededor del 80-90% de la membrecía y, por lo menos, diez familias no podrán retornar a sus hogares.
En primera instancia estos serían los objetivos y prioridades de nuestra Obra Bautista en Lorca después del terremoto. Sin embargo, la reacción de nuestros hermanos allí me ha dejado sorprendido. No les he visto llorar (dicen que ya lloraron en su día) y su firmeza espiritual y entereza emocional dejan impactado a cualquiera. De hecho, sí les oí alabar a Dios y pensar más en las necesidades del vecindario y en cómo atenderlas antes que pensar en las suyas propias. Sin duda, estoy convencido de que esta desgracia se tornará en bendición y será una herramienta que Dios usará para impulsar su Obra en esta ciudad.
Mientras tanto seguimos animando a nuestras Iglesias de la Unión a participar en lo que el Señor les muestre. Y me gustaría reseñar unas primeras iniciativas solidarias para que nos sirvan de modelo:
1. Nuestra Iglesia hermana en Orihuela ha puesto en marcha una campaña que ha titulado "Orihuela con Lorca" y que pretende reunir fondos y utilizar nuestro protocolo para ayudar a la ciudadanía lorquina. De momento ya cuenta con el apoyo explícito del Colegio de Abogados, la Cámara de Comercio, la Asociación de Empresarios, el Foro Social y la Universidad Miguel Hernández.
2. La Iglesia de Murcia está preparando un Concierto Solidario para Lorca.
3. Y desde el extranjero, y respondiendo a peticiones hechas desde Secretaría, Ministerios Internacionales de las American Baptist Churches (representada por nuestro estimado Pr. José Norat) ha comprometido la donación de 10.000$ para Lorca. Por otro lado, International Mission Board (Misión Bautista en España) también ha asegurado hacer un importante esfuerzo para apoyar a nuestros hermanos. Y se han recibido muchos mensajes de solidaridad de muchas de nuestras Iglesias, de la FIEIDE, de la IEE y de hermanos desde el extranjero.
4. La Fundación ÁBSIDE está preparando proyectos para recabar ayudas públicas para emergencias.
Por supuesto estamos abiertos a otras iniciativas que puedan ser de utilidad para aumentar nuestra ayuda a los hermanos lorquinos. Abramos los ojos y la mentes y aprovechemos desde nuestras Iglesias locales esta tragedia para iniciar acciones concretas y comunicarlas a nuestra ciudad o entorno para explicar que la Iglesia Bautista piensa en todas las necesidades del ser humano. Con seguridad, todas serán muy bien recibidas en este Ministerio de Obra Social.
Finalmente, y siguiendo el protocolo de máxima participación local, el sábado se constituyó en Lorca una Comisión que gestionará la distribución de las ayudas recibidas y que estará formada por el Pastor de la Primera Iglesia, el responsable de la Iglesia Buen Pastor, la Pastora de la Iglesia de Murcia y el representante territorial del Sureste, con la coordinación del Ministerio de Obra Social de nuestra Unión.
La nota triste añadida ha sido el reciente fallecimiento por enfermedad (en la pasada madrugada) del hermano del Pastor de Lorca, Francisco Martínez, que se ha desplazado urgentemente a Lleida y que ya está de regreso.
De momento estas son las noticias de que disponemos pero que van ampliándose cada día. Esperamos poder enviar en breve un nuevo informe con más iniciativas para bendecir la ciudad de Lorca y su Obra Bautista con nuestra oración, trabajo y recursos.
