Annoyed with God's Way...

I confess – I felt annoyed with God. Saturday morning the night after outreach (and my chance to sleep in), I woke up early filled with worry and concern. For the first time in six years, I was seriously thinking about letting women go from NightLight. The thought scared me. We didn’t rescue them from prostitution to release them back to darkness. “But God, where is the funding going to come from?” With these complaints running through my mind, I went to get a cup of coffee only to discover that a NL woman and her teenage son were in crisis and waiting at my gate since 7 a.m. I was not happy about it. “God!" I argued, “You want me to take care of these people? You want me to do this on a Saturday? God, you are sending all this need, but who is going to pay to support them? How do you expect me to keep this going? I’m tired! I need help God!”

I confess my attitude was not godly. I let fear and worry about the financial needs overwhelm me. I knew I couldn’t send them away. My husband Jeff and I went out to meet them. For the next two hours, we listened and counseled them. The husband and father had returned home the night before drunk and violent. They didn’t know where to turn. As I listened, my heart softened, filled with concern for them and their situation. God cares for the broken-hearted even on my Sabbath! It was enough to snap me out of my self-pity and fear, and turn my eyes back to God’s promises.

God promised he would provide. He didn’t say how exactly. Isaiah 58 tells us that God’s plan does include the sacrifices of His people. So many times I have prayed for a different plan. Wouldn’t it be awesome to have the money miraculously appear as we pay salaries in faith? But God wants His people to share in the struggles and the joys. God has always come through for us, and he has done it through the generosity of people committed to the cause.

You Make It Possible!

I wonder if you realize just how significant you are to God’s plans being fulfilled. We get hundreds of visitors a year who praise God for the stories of lives rescued and encourage us to keep up the good work. A lot even pray that we will rescue many more women! We appreciate the encouragement and hope for the same, but what people don’t understand is that we could not have done it without you. Every victim rescued, every woman comforted, every job given and family restored through NightLight happens because you have been faithful to God in meeting the needs of His kingdom. We are the hands and feet, but we cannot rescue women without you financing it. We cannot offer them jobs of dignity without you buying or selling jewelry. We cannot spend time listening to their heart-breaking stories and giving them hope without you supporting us. We cannot fight this battle against trafficking and exploitation without your prayers. We are an extension of your passion to see God’s work done.

The woman appeared at my gate at an inconvenient time. The economic crisis is an inconvenient time for anyone to be asking for support. Though we may be inconveniencing you, we are asking you to prayerfully consider giving. NightLight needs $35,000 a month to provide jobs and holistic care to the women rescued, and to reach out to new women. We don’t ask you to make any sacrifice that God would not ask of you. We do believe that giving in the times when it is hardest does reap great results. God loves a cheerful giver, and whether you can give $5 or $5000, God will honor the gift and multiply it. We will continue to do the work here in Bangkok, and we ask you to continue to make it possible. Together we carry out God’s call to rescue the captives and bind up the broken-hearted.

Consider the amazing things God has done -- over 150 Thai women employed since 2005, 17 international trafficked victims rescued, families restored, a church for the women and their families, a child-care center, hundreds of women in prostitution visited each year – and you get a glimpse of what your support has done and is capable of doing. By the way, the husband came to church the next day with his wife and son. Jeff was able to pray with him as the young man cried in repentance. This is one of the families that you are helping to be restored and to have hope. Thank you!
