“Alive and well and living in the United States”. That’s us...Since our return to the US for our home assignment, this refrain has been going through my mind. As friends in many places ask how we are, it speaks to our situation where we have had all our needs met as we live here, to the excitement we have had as we visit churches and speak about what God is doing in Okinawa, and to the way we see the wonderful things God is doing in churches we have visited.
Our schedule has been truly overflowing the past three months, but we have been ENCOURAGED! We wish you could see what we have been able to see...that in a world with the constant focus on the negative and the sensational, we have seen churches quietly and humbly focusing on Living the Word, Proclaiming the Word, and on Transforming their communities with the Power and Love of God.
We have seen churches with powerful ministries to unchurched children in the community; churches that have been to tornado affected areas to help in rebuilding; those that collect school supplies and backpacks for kids who need them and then continue to supply these kids with food for the weekend when they have no food; the churches with a prayer ministry, reaching out into the community to bring people in through seminars and study; a prison ministry started with a personal need, supplies sent to mission centers, mission trips to places far and near; Upward Sports programs, commitment to summer VBS and day camps and camping; ladies groups constant in rolling bandages and “Love Gift”....the list could go on and on...what a privilege it has been to see from the inside the positive difference churches and individuals are making as they live and proclaim the Word!
As we have visited churches, we are always reminded of the words of Acts 1:8: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
We have seen Gods work transforming lives in churches, communities and the broader community to their states and country...and we are excited about the partnerships God is forming that involve churches in sharing God’s Word to the ends of the earth.
Are there problems? Yes, of course...we live in an imperfect world. But when God’s people make the sharing of His Word and Service to Him a priority, we can change the first line of this newsletter to, “God’s people alive and well and serving in God’s world”. That’s better.
