Teach English at Sahamit School, Musikee Thailand

Qualified English teacher(s) needed to serve in rural northern Thailand as an English teacher in Sahamit school at Musikee and in homes on an informal basis.

This is a wonderful opportunity for those who are willing to experience a bit of genuine Karen village life to help students from poor backgrounds improve their English.  The locals are extremely welcoming and the natural surroundings are incredibly beautiful.  The school has about 700 students, ranging from age 5 to 18, covering all grade levels.

About 200 students live in a dormitory at the school, with another 150 living in dormitories in local villages.  The remaining students live in the local area.  The school is administered under the Karen Baptist Convention and International Ministries’ missionaries were involved in starting it about 50 years ago.  There is a strong Christian ethos and regular bible assemblies and worship services.

Prior teaching experience is essential.  The area will very rarely have other foreigners, so a couple is recommended to come. The volunteers should be flexible, able to change plans quickly and adapt to new situations! There would be the option to preach and teach in local churches and student dormitories if the volunteers were willing and able to do so.  Translation could be found in these circumstances. Volunteers need to be Christians and mature in their approach to local cultural attitudes – particularly in the areas of alcohol, appropriate dress and behavior.

Minimum length of service is 20 weeks
