Typhoon Washi slammed ashore in Mindanao Island in the southern part of Philippines in the late evening of December 17, according to Yahoo news. The typhoon claimed 684 lives while residents slept, sending torrents of water and mud through riverside villages and sweeping houses out to sea. According to an unverified report, about 20,000 soldiers have been mobilized in a huge rescue and relief operation across the stricken north cost of the island of Mindanao, where the major ports of Cagayan de Oro city and Iligan were worst hit. Fortunately, the waters receded quickly in contrast to the floods in the northern Philippines which can last for weeks or even months.

President Benigno Aquino expressed concern at the extent of the tragedy and ordered government agencies to map out areas in the country most vulnerable to future flash floods.

We have been checking the affected areas in Mindanao with our partner the Convention of Philippines Baptist Churches (CPBC). Rev. Librado Repolidon reported that CPBC churches and communities are quite far from the affected areas but asked for prayer and support for the victims. Rev. Jerry Muring, President of General Baptist Churches of the Philippines based in Davao informed us that their churches and members have not been affected. Moreover, Ms. Henna Caipang, Director of the CPBC Development Ministries, and Ms. Feraz Legita, Associate Director of Asia Pacific Baptist Aid continue to check with other mission and relief organizations about the best way to help the relief work.
