Luke 12: 6-7 “Aren’t  five sparrows sold for two pennies?  Yet not one sparrow is forgotten by God. Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth much more than many sparrows!”

Pastors from Okinawa Baptist churches went on a mission to Northeast Japan in June 2011 to encourage and comfort the survivors of the March 11th disaster.  Many elderly homeless gathered in their shelter’s hallway to hear the pastors perform a Gospel mini-concert.

Prior to singing, David says he timidly approached a lady near a window and greeted her.  Mrs. Ohashi began to ask questions about the program in his hand.  “What is the meaning of that first song, ‘His Eye is on the Sparrow’?” “Who is the One watching the sparrow?”

David explained that He is the Creator God who made the world and all that is in it.  “He is so great that He knows all the creatures he made—even the little sparrows.   He loves each one of them, and watches over them, but he loves you much more.”  As he sang with the group, David says his eyes kept going to Mrs. Ohashi , who constantly wiped tears from her cheeks.

After the concert she said to him,  “I lost my three best friends and my home to the tsunami.  I felt as if I had nothing left in my life. Did you see that little girl running around during the concert? She’s my granddaughter.   Maybe your God let me live so I can take care of her.” Mrs. Ohashi,  as a wounded bird in the palm of God’s hand, at least has a renewed sense of purpose in her life.
