Estela ministers to Haitian women and children through the Mission Baptist Consortium of churches in Nassau, Bahamas. Due to impoverished conditions and political instability in Haiti, more than 50,000 Haitian immigrants now reside in the Bahamas - most are undocumented. Like many other immigrant communities throughout the world, Haitians in the Bahamas face severe discrimination and often do menial labor for substandard wages.
Dan serves the Mission Baptist Consortium of Churches in the area of theological education at Atlantic College and Theological Seminary in Nassau preparing national leaders to more effectively serve their local churches and communities.
They write: This fall, Estela started an after-school tutoring program for the primary school children residing in the neighborhood around Emmaus Baptist Church.
While most of these children were born in the Bahamas, their parents are Haitian immigrants and, consequently, often lack both the formal education and English language skills necessary to assist their children with their schoolwork. By providing after-school tutoring one day each week, Estela hopes to help these children improve their grades as well as provide them with the encouragement and motivation to stay in school and complete their studies.
So far, the program has averaged about six to eight children per week and the main focus has been providing homework assistance. Right now, Estela has had one or two volunteers come each week to help her out but is hoping that as more volunteer tutors become available she will be able to make the program available to more children on a more regular basis.
- *Pray for Dan and Estela as they minister to the Haitian community in the Bahamas.
- *Pray for the workers and for the children being reached in the after school tutoring program.
- *Pray for the light of Christ to shine through them as they reach out to the Haitian community and train leaders.
