Seeking Peace And Offering Refuge

“Seek peace, and pursue it.” Psalm 34:14

An expected 45,000 ethnic refugees from Burma will arrive in the United States over the next three years. At present more than 500,000 ethnic people have been displaced inside of Burma (now known as Myanmar) and more than 150,000 are refugees along the Thai-Burma border.

Adoniram and Ann Judson were our first missionaries, arriving in Burma in 1813. Some of the first to become followers of Jesus through their ministry were the Karen, who were an oppressed ethnic minority. Today the Karen, the Chin and other ethnic groups are still persecuted in Burma and are fleeing for their lives. Many are coming to the United States.

This unique “reunion” blurs the line between work “at home” and “abroad” as well as between resolving conflict and creating new communities. We believe God is calling us to seek peace and to welcome the stranger. International Ministries’ personnel are helping churches, local and regional organizations to extend a caring welcome to these new refugees. Missionaries such as Duane and Marcia Binkley are assisting Burma refugees, both in southeast Asia and in the United States, as they transition into secure resettlement.

Our short and long-term personnel are active in the work of reconciling people to one another. One of these, our global consultant Dan Buttry, reaches across cultures to teach the skills of conflict transformation. We do not work alone, but with local Christians and other people of good will who invite us to participate with them. In achieving peace with justice, fewer people become refugees or are displaced from their homes and separated from their families and communities.

Let’s work together.

Welcome the stranger. Help them learn English as their new language.

Support those teaching conflict transformation.
