Indonesia – Tsunami Relief
GoalHelp Sulawesi, Indonesia, recover from the devastating tsunami of September 28, 2018
SummaryThe Indonesian island of Sulawesi was devastated by a massive earthquake and tsunami on September 28, 2018, followed days later by a volcanic eruption. International Ministries is now working with local partners to provide emergency relief and lay the groundwork for long-term recovery for those affected.
DescriptionIn the wake of the tsunami that leveled large swaths of Central Sulawesi, International Ministries sent $15,000 in One Great Hour of Sharing emergency funds to partners in Indonesia that are helping with recovery efforts.
“International Ministries will be working with our partners in Indonesia, including the Union of Indonesia Baptist Churches and their relief arm, REBANA, as well as with the other organizations that will be coordinating with Baptist organizations,” explains Leslie Turley, IM area director for Southeast Asia and Japan. “On-the-ground research and connection with local churches is being done by REBANA and representatives of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.”
With the widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure, tens of thousands of people have been displaced. The already high death toll is expected to rise as food, clean water and medical supplies become increasingly scarce in the areas most affected. IM partners are working to identify ways to most effectively help survivors through the difficult days ahead and, ultimately, to rebuild.
Additional funding for these relief efforts is urgently needed.
One Great Hour of Sharing is administered by the World Relief Committee of the Board of General Ministries of American Baptist Churches USA. The Committee facilitates American Baptist emergency relief, disaster rehabilitation, refugee work and development assistance by establishing policy guidelines and overseeing distribution of the annual OGHS offering received by churches.
Prayer RequestsJoin us in prayer for the people of Central Sulawesi, Indonesia—for health, strength and hope.
Please pray for IM partners in Indonesia, that God would give them the wisdom to see how they can make the best use of what they have to serve those who have been most affected by the disaster, that they would have the resources they need for this crucial work and that God's love would shine through their actions.
Please pray also for Aaron and Valerie Osterbrock, endorsed IM missionaries who are currently attending language school in Indonesia. Praise God that they were unharmed, and pray that they will remain safe from the long-term effects of these destructive natural events.
