Posted on October 1, 2020 An IRA gift to International Ministries can be life-changing.
It’s easy to use gifts from an IRA to support God’s mission. Dick Juday shares how he did it.

DICK JUDAY’S STORY

Over the course of his 40-year career as a telecommunications engineer, Richard “Dick” Juday has lived and worked in countries around the world, including Iran, New Zealand, Hungary, Portugal, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. Now retired, Dick is a friend and supporter of IM Global Servants Ann and Bruce Borquist, Ann and Bill Clemmer, and Aphiwan and Scott Coats.

“One of the main things I learned during those years of living and working abroad,” Dick said, “is that one can find a fellowship of Christians anywhere in the world if you seek them out. And you feel a kinship instantly when you find them.” Read Dick’s full story about giving through an IRA.

TWO BENEFITS OF GIVING THROUGH AN IRA

Under the current IRS tax law, there is much talk about the standard charitable deduction. But you should know that a gift from your IRA will directly reduce your adjusted gross income!

Making a qualified charitable distribution from your IRA has two main benefits:

  1. First, a qualified charitable distribution from your IRA counts toward satisfying your required minimum distribution (RMD) for that year if you have reached age 73 or more. If you are age 73 or older, IRS rules require you to take (RMDs) each year from your tax-deferred retirement accounts.
  2. Second, by making a charitable gift of your RMD, it is excluded from taxable income.  You must be at least 70½ years old at the time you request a QCD to bypass taxable income.

Because of the new, higher standard deduction, very few individuals are expecting to itemize. This second benefit can be better than itemizing deductions. When you make a direct IRA gift, you get a full exclusion of the income and reduce the taxable amount.

If you are subject to RMDs and want to enlarge the work of IM in God’s mission, a gift direct from your IRA works for you and will be put to work for the kingdom.
